Lipari and Salina are the largest, Panarea the most social, Stromboli still active and Vulcano closest to the Sicilian mainland. Distances between them are short, and the water is deep and very clear.

The Aeolian season runs from roughly June to September, with August the busiest by a wide margin. June and September usually give calmer anchorages and better berth availability at Lipari and Panarea.
