A historic return
Africa’s Grand Prix Returns
For more than three decades the Formula 1 World Championship has raced without a stop on the African continent. That changed on 13 October 2026, when Formula 1 and the FIA announced a 10-year agreement for the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda.
The race will be held at a new purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, about 40 km south of Kigali, beside the new international airport under construction. The track is planned to FIA Grade 1 standards and designed around the area’s natural elevation changes. The first Grand Prix will take place once the circuit is completed, expected early in the next decade.
Rwanda already hosts major international events, and is known for its safety, its highland scenery and its mountain gorillas. For travellers, the race offers a reason to discover a destination that pairs well with private aviation and exceptional lodges.
