How to Compare Yacht Builders

Lund Group does not rank shipyards. These are the questions that decide whether a particular yacht suits a particular owner.

How the yard builds

Full custom, semi-custom or series changes the timeline, the comparables available and the way the yacht is valued later.

Material and engineering

Steel, aluminium and composite behave differently in survey, refit and running cost. Read the individual yacht, not the brand.

Generation and refit history

A well-maintained older hull from a strong yard frequently presents better than a neglected recent one.

Layout for a second owner

Custom yachts reflect the original brief. The question is whether that layout works for how you intend to use the yacht.

Crew and operating demand

Length, volume and systems set the crew number, berthing and annual budget more than the builder does.

Support and documentation

Complete build, class and service records shorten due diligence and protect resale value.

Why the Builder Matters in Resale

The builder's name is one factor among several, and rarely the decisive one.

Recognition helps liquidity

Yachts from yards with a long delivery record and a known service network usually find buyers more readily.

But condition sets the price

Survey findings, machinery hours, refit history and completeness of documentation move a valuation far more than the builder's name.

Specification ages

Tender and toy capacity, technical spaces, stabilisation and interior style date at different rates and are priced accordingly.

No guarantees

Lund Group makes no representation about future value. Nothing here is investment advice.

Considering a New Build?

If nothing on the brokerage market fits the brief, a new build or an existing build slot may be the right route.

Builder Market Intelligence

How the market behaves by segment, written plainly and without invented statistics.

Series production

The deepest pool of comparables, the most transparent pricing and the fastest transactions.

Semi-custom platforms

Sister yachts allow direct comparison, while interiors and specification still differentiate individual hulls.

Full custom

Thin comparables. Valuation rests on volume, engineering, condition and how specific the original brief was.

Explorer and support

Bought for capability and range; assessed on class notation, tankage and equipment rather than styling.

Yacht Builder Questions

Who are the leading luxury yacht builders?

The yards most consistently represented in the large-yacht market include Lürssen, Feadship, Oceanco and Abeking & Rasmussen in northern Europe, and Benetti, Sanlorenzo, CRN, Codecasa and Baglietto in Italy, alongside Amels, Heesen and Damen in the Netherlands. Lund Group does not rank shipyards; each yacht is assessed individually.

What is the difference between custom, semi-custom and series yachts?

A full-custom yacht is engineered and styled for one owner over a multi-year programme. A semi-custom yacht uses a proven hull and engineering package with a personalised layout and interior. A series yacht repeats a defined model, which gives the widest choice of comparables and the most transparent resale market.

Which yacht builders hold their value best?

Resale depends far more on condition, refit history, specification and documentation than on the builder alone. Yards with long delivery records and established service networks tend to be more liquid, but Lund Group makes no representation about the future value of any yacht.

Do you have yachts for sale from a specific builder?

Published listings appear on each builder's page and update as inventory changes. Many opportunities are not publicly listed, so if you are looking for a particular shipyard or model, tell us and we will approach owners and central agents discreetly.

Can Lund Group help with a new build?

Yes. We advise on new-build and existing build slots, including shipyard shortlisting, contract review coordination with your lawyer, and build supervision arrangements. Availability of slots is confirmed directly with the shipyard.

Do yacht builders sell directly to buyers?

Shipyards sell new yachts, usually through their own commercial teams or appointed sales partners. Used yachts are sold by their owners through a central agent. Lund Group acts for the buyer in either case and is not an authorised dealer for any yard.

What should I check when buying a used yacht from any builder?

Structural and machinery survey, sea trial, class and flag status, refit and service records, warranty position, crew arrangements, VAT and ownership structure, and the clarity of the memorandum of agreement. Your lawyer and surveyor lead those workstreams.

How long does a new build take?

It varies by yard, size and material, and shipyards confirm build slots and delivery dates directly. Larger full-custom projects run over several years, and brokerage yachts are the faster route to being on the water.

Are Italian, Dutch, German and Turkish yards different?

In broad terms, German and Dutch yards are associated with large full-custom displacement engineering, Italian yards cover the widest range from series to full custom, Turkish yards are increasingly present in the custom 40 metre-plus market, and British yards build well-benchmarked series production. Every yacht is still judged individually.

Does Lund Group represent any shipyard?

No. Lund Group is an independent brokerage and represents its clients, not shipyards. No page on this site implies a dealership, agency or endorsement.

Find the Right Yacht, Not Just the Right Builder

The shipyard narrows the search. Condition, specification, history and terms decide the purchase. Lund Group represents the buyer through all of it.

Lund Group is an independent yacht brokerage and is not a dealer, agent or authorised representative of any shipyard named on this page. Builder details are published for reference only. Specifications, condition, availability, access and asking terms for any individual yacht are confirmed in writing with the central agent before anything is committed.
