How it is charged
Usually an annual management fee, scaled to the yacht's size and the scope of service. Large one-off projects — a refit, a new build supervision mandate, a change of flag — are commonly charged separately or on a project basis. Crew payroll, insurance premiums and operating expenses pass through at cost.
Why owners use it
Because the alternative is an owner carrying employment obligations, technical accountability and compliance risk personally. For most private owners management is not a discretionary overhead; it is what keeps the yacht crewed, compliant, insured and available.
Choosing a manager
Look for genuine experience with yachts of your size and flag, transparent fee structure, real technical capability rather than administration alone, references from owners you can speak to, and clarity on who your day-to-day contact is.
Self-management
Some experienced owners with strong captains manage in-house. It can work, and it concentrates responsibility — employment, compliance and technical accountability — on the owning entity and the captain. It should be a considered decision, not a cost-saving default.
