Best Time to Charter in the Mediterranean

The season in outline

The Mediterranean charter season runs broadly from late April to the end of October. Yachts reposition from the Caribbean and the yards in spring, work the western Mediterranean and the Adriatic and Aegean through the summer, and begin crossing back or laying up in the autumn. Within that window, each month behaves differently.

May and June

Warm, quiet and usually the best value of the summer. The sea is cooler in May but anchorages are empty, berths are easier and the crew is fresh from refit. June is the month many experienced charterers prefer: long days, comfortable heat and far less pressure on marinas than July or August.

July and August

Peak season. The water is warmest, the days longest and demand highest — which means the best yachts are committed early, berths in Porto Cervo, Capri, Hvar and Saint-Tropez are constrained, and prices sit at their top. In the Aegean, August also brings the strongest meltemi wind, which can reshape a Cyclades itinerary.

September and October

September is widely considered the best all-round month: warm sea, thinner crowds, easier berths and steady weather. October still works in the eastern Mediterranean and Turkey, where the water stays warm, though the western season winds down and the event calendar takes over in Cannes and Saint-Tropez.

Timing and lead times

Peak weeks and event weeks are the constraint, not the season. Christmas in the Caribbean and July to August in the Mediterranean are usually committed months ahead, and event weeks such as the Grand Prix or the Monaco Yacht Show sooner still. Flexible dates always widen the choice of yacht.
