Off-Market Yachts

An off-market yacht is one that is not publicly listed but whose owner would consider a sale. They are found through broker relationships and direct, discreet approaches, and they account for a meaningful share of larger transactions.

How quiet sales work, why owners use them, and how a buyer reaches them.

What off-market means

Not advertised, not on the listing systems, often not formally for sale at all — but available at the right price to the right buyer. Some owners want confidentiality; some do not want crew, charter clients or competitors to know; some would sell but will not commit to a public marketing campaign.

Why a buyer should care

In the larger size bands the publicly listed fleet is only part of the picture. A buyer with a specific brief — a particular builder, a particular volume, a particular layout — will often find the closest match unlisted. Quiet processes can also be calmer and less competitive than a contested listing.

How it is actually done

Through relationships. A broker who knows a segment knows who owns what, who has changed programme, who has a new build on order, and who has quietly asked for a market opinion. The approach is made discreetly, on the owner's terms, with the buyer's interest demonstrated before any detail is exchanged.

  • A precise written brief, including budget and timing
  • Demonstrable ability and readiness to transact
  • Confidentiality on both sides
  • Patience — quiet processes run on the owner's timetable

The cautions

Off-market does not mean cheap, and it does not reduce the need for diligence. An unlisted yacht still requires survey, sea trial, title and encumbrance checks and a proper sale agreement. Beware anyone offering exclusive access to yachts they cannot evidence a relationship with — unverifiable off-market lists circulate widely and are usually worthless.

How we handle it

We take a written brief, approach owners and central agents directly where we have a genuine relationship, and present only what we have verified. We do not circulate speculative lists, and we do not represent both sides without disclosing it.

Questions

Are off-market yachts cheaper?
Not inherently. Pricing reflects the yacht and the owner's motivation, not the absence of advertising.
Can Lund Group source an off-market yacht?
Yes, where we hold a genuine relationship with the owner or central agent. We present only what we can verify.

This guide is general information about how the yacht market conventionally works. It is not legal, tax or financial advice, and it does not describe the terms of any specific yacht. Rates, prices, availability and access are confirmed in writing before anything is committed.
