How Much Does a Yacht Cost?
What actually drives the asking price of a yacht, and the running costs that sit behind that figure.
What drives price
Two yachts of the same length can differ enormously in price. The variables that move the figure most are the shipyard and its reputation, the build and refit years, volume in gross tonnage rather than length alone, the quality of the interior and its designer, machinery hours and condition, class and flag status, and how well documented the maintenance history is.

Running cost is the real commitment
The purchase figure is one payment. Running cost is annual and continues in years when the yacht is barely used. Crew salaries, insurance, berthing, fuel, maintenance, classification, refit reserve and management fees are the main lines.
The convention widely cited across the industry is that annual running cost approximates a share of the yacht's value in the region of ten per cent, but that is a planning device, not a quotation. A realistic budget is built line by line for the specific yacht, its crew number and its programme.
Charter income is an offset, not a business case
Placing a yacht in charter can offset part of the annual cost. It does not usually make a yacht profitable, and it imposes commercial registration, compliance and wear considerations. We model it honestly rather than optimistically.
