Why a Maldives Charter Is Different From the Mediterranean
In the Mediterranean, yachts move between towns, harbours and restaurants. In the Maldives the day is shaped by reefs, channels, tide and weather. There are few marinas in the European sense, and much of the time is spent at anchor inside a lagoon.

Geography
How the Atolls Are Laid Out
The Maldives stretches north to south across a long chain of atolls. Each atoll is a ring of reef enclosing a lagoon, broken by channels where water flows in and out with the tide — those channels are often where the marine life concentrates.
Distances between the northern and southern atolls are considerable. Most charters therefore centre on the atolls around Malé, then extend west to Ari or north-west to Baa depending on the season, the yacht and the experiences you want.
Arrival point
Malé and North Malé Atoll
Most guests arrive through Velana International Airport, on its own island beside Malé, the capital. Yachts commonly embark guests in the Malé area, which makes North Malé Atoll a natural first stop.
North Malé offers reefs, channels and resort islands within a short distance of the airport, making it well suited to shorter charters, a first night aboard or combining a yacht with a resort stay. The surf breaks in this area are covered below.
Channels & reefs
South Malé Atoll
South of the capital, South Malé Atoll is known for its channels and reef passages, which can make for strong drift diving when conditions suit. It is often included in itineraries that continue south towards Vaavu or west towards Ari.
West of Malé
Ari Atoll
Ari Atoll lies west of Malé and is one of the best-known areas of the country for marine life. South Ari in particular is associated with whale shark encounters, and the atoll's reefs and channels are popular with divers and snorkellers.
Encounters with wildlife are never guaranteed. Your captain and any local guide will plan days around conditions and the relevant rules for each area.
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
Baa Atoll
Baa Atoll, north-west of Malé, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is known for its reefs and for the manta ray aggregations that can occur in parts of the atoll during the south-west monsoon months.
Protected area
Hanifaru Bay
Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is a protected marine area known for seasonal feeding aggregations of manta rays and, at times, whale sharks. Access is regulated: visits are controlled, scuba diving has been prohibited inside the bay, and snorkelling has been permitted only under the rules in force, often with a limited number of visitors and local guides.
These rules can change. Lund Group confirms the current regulations, permits and visiting arrangements before including Hanifaru Bay in any itinerary, and a visit can never be promised in advance. Sightings depend entirely on nature.

Diving
Maldives Yacht Charter With Diving
The Maldives is one of the world's leading diving destinations, with channel dives, reef walls and pinnacles across the central atolls. Diving on a yacht charter is arranged in one of two ways: on a yacht that is verified as equipped and permitted for diving, or with qualified local dive providers who meet the yacht.
Not every yacht carries dive equipment or crew qualified to supervise diving. We confirm each yacht's equipment, compressor, nitrox, instructors and any restrictions individually. Where a yacht is not dive-equipped, diving may be arranged with qualified local providers where appropriate. Certification requirements apply, and beginners can often start with supervised introductory experiences.
Surfing
Maldives Surf Yacht Charter
The Maldives has reef breaks in several atolls, including the area around North Malé and, further south, Huvadhoo. Surf conditions are generally stronger during the south-west monsoon months.
Some surf breaks are subject to local access arrangements. A yacht with a capable tender or chase boat makes it easier to reach breaks at the right time of day. We confirm surf support, tender capability and any access rules for your dates.
On the water
Water Sports and Time at Anchor
Calm lagoons suit paddleboards, kayaks, snorkelling, foiling and tender trips to sandbanks. Motorised water sports and equipment vary by yacht, and some may be restricted in certain areas or near resorts. We confirm each yacht's water toys and the rules where you plan to use them.
Resort + Yacht
Combining a Resort Stay With a Yacht
Many guests combine a resort stay with several nights aboard — arriving at a resort and then joining the yacht, or the reverse. The yacht can also visit resorts for dinner or spa treatments where the resort accepts visiting guests.
Resort access for yacht guests is at each resort's discretion and usually requires advance arrangement. Lund Group is independent of all resorts and coordinates these arrangements as part of your plan.

When to go
When to Charter a Yacht in the Maldives
The Maldives is a year-round destination shaped by two monsoon seasons. The north-east monsoon, roughly December to April, is generally drier and calmer with good visibility. The south-west monsoon, roughly May to November, brings more wind and rain, but also coincides with stronger surf and the manta season in Baa Atoll.
Yacht positioning in the region is seasonal too. Early planning matters, especially for the festive season.

How Much Does a Maldives Yacht Charter Cost?
The cost depends on the yacht, the length of the charter, the season, the guest numbers and what is included. On top of the charter fee, you should expect an advance budget for running costs (APA), taxes where applicable, and possibly delivery or repositioning fees.

Why Yacht Positioning Matters More Here
Relatively few large private yachts are based in the Maldives year-round. Some yachts visit the region as part of a wider Indian Ocean programme; others would need to travel a long distance to get there. A yacht that is suitable for the Maldives in principle may not be in the region for your dates.
We therefore keep cruising suitability, current position, availability and charter permissions separate, and confirm each one before presenting a yacht. Any delivery fee is stated clearly.
Running costs
APA and Diving Costs
The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is an advance budget for running costs such as fuel, food, drinks and local fees. The captain accounts for it during the charter, and any unused balance is returned.
Diving costs depend on how it is arranged. Dives with local providers, guides, equipment rental, nitrox and permits may be charged separately. We confirm these before you travel.
Getting there
Getting to the Yacht and Private Aviation
Most guests fly into Velana International Airport (MLE) near Malé, where the yacht or a transfer boat can often meet them. Seaplane and domestic flights connect to other atolls, and a yacht can meet guests further afield if that suits the itinerary.
Lund Group arranges private jets to the Maldives, as well as airport handling, seaplane or boat transfers and the connection to the yacht, as one coordinated journey.

Maldives or Seychelles?
The Maldives is low, flat coral atolls with lagoons, channels and an emphasis on diving and marine life. The Seychelles are granite and coral islands with dramatic landscapes, beaches and walking ashore. Both suit private yacht charters; the right choice depends on what you want from the water and the land.
Some clients also combine an Indian Ocean charter with the Red Sea or with destinations in Asia over the same season.
