Types of explorer

Not every "explorer" is built for the same job

  • Purpose-built explorer

Designed from the start for long range and remote cruising. Usually steel hulls, large tanks, generous storage and robust machinery.

  • Commercial-vessel conversion

Built as a working ship (for example a supply, research or fishing vessel) and later converted to private use. Can be very capable, but conversion quality and paperwork vary widely.

  • Support / shadow vessel

Carries tenders, toys, a helicopter or submersible, extra crew and stores alongside a main yacht.

  • Expedition-styled yacht

Has explorer looks or a large aft deck, but may not have the range, tanks or redundancy of a true explorer. Verify capability, not styling.

Long-range capability

Range, autonomy and redundancy

  • Range: ask for logged fuel use at real cruising speeds, not brochure figures
  • Fuel and fresh-water capacity, plus watermaker output
  • Provisioning: cold, frozen and dry stores for weeks away from port
  • Waste handling and how long the yacht can stay out
  • Redundancy: twin engines, spare generators, duplicated critical systems
  • Spares inventory and workshop on board

Ice and polar

What an ice class does and does not mean

  • Ice class notation

Issued by the classification society. It describes hull strengthening for specified ice conditions, not permission to go anywhere.

  • Polar Code

Ships in polar waters may need a Polar Ship Certificate and operating manual. Requirements depend on the yacht, its flag and where it goes.

  • Verify on paper

Check the class certificate, not the listing description. Confirm the notation is current and matches the hull as it is today.

Tenders, helicopters and submersibles

Expedition equipment

  • Helideck: certified for landing, or touch-and-go only? Check the certificate and the helicopter size it allows
  • Hangar and refuelling, if any
  • Deck cranes: lifting capacity and inspection certificates
  • Tender garages and launch systems
  • Submersible: certification, maintenance and pilot requirements
  • Dive, medical and survival equipment

World cruising

Planning remote voyages

Remote cruising needs more than a capable yacht. Plan permits and cruising licences, local agents, fuel and provisioning stops, crew rotation and medical support. Some regions need specialist ice pilots or expedition guides. We help buyers check whether a yacht suits the voyages they actually want to make.

Builder discovery

Explorer yacht builders

Other builders buyers often consider for explorers include Cantiere delle Marche, Bering, Numarine and Freire. We can search for their yachts privately. Lund Group is not affiliated with any of these builders.

Due diligence

How to assess a pre-owned explorer

  • Classification status, survey due dates and ice notation
  • Steel or aluminium: hull thickness gauging and corrosion survey
  • Conversion paperwork: who converted it, when, and to what standard
  • Machinery hours, overhaul records and spares
  • Tank condition and real fuel consumption
  • Helideck, crane and lifting certificates
  • Refit history, including major structural work
  • Flag and commercial compliance if you plan to charter
  • Sea trial in realistic conditions

Older yachts and conversions need extra care. A yacht such as VOYAGER, built in 1973, should be judged on its refit and class records rather than its age alone.

Private sourcing

Beyond the public listings

Explorer yachts often change hands without public advertising. With a clear brief, we approach brokers and owners' representatives discreetly. We cannot promise off-market inventory. Every opportunity is confirmed with its owner first.

New build

Buy, convert or build new?

A pre-owned explorer can be cruising soon. A conversion can offer real capability at a different cost, with more risk. A new explorer usually takes several years. Slots, delivery dates and prices must be confirmed by the shipyard. Explore new-build advisory →

Selling

Selling an explorer yacht

If you own an explorer yacht, we can position it against comparable yachts and present it discreetly to qualified buyers. Sell your yacht →

Explorer yachts: frequently asked questions

How many explorer yachts does Lund Group have for sale?

This page shows every published, active explorer yacht for sale in our database and updates automatically. We can also search the wider market privately.

Is an explorer yacht a motor yacht?

Usually, yes. Explorer describes the yacht's mission and capability, not a separate hull type. Most explorers are motor yachts built for long range.

What is the difference between a purpose-built explorer and a conversion?

A purpose-built explorer was designed as a private yacht from the start. A conversion began as a working vessel. Conversions can be capable, but quality and paperwork vary, so survey carefully.

Does an ice class mean a yacht can go to Antarctica?

Not on its own. An ice class describes hull strengthening. Polar voyages may also need Polar Code certification, permits and specialist planning.

Can a helicopter land on any explorer yacht with a helideck?

No. Helidecks are certified for specific helicopter sizes and uses. Check the certificate before relying on it.

Is Lund Group affiliated with the builders mentioned?

No. Lund Group is independent and represents buyers. We are not affiliated with or authorised by any shipyard.
