Sailing or power

Sailing catamarans and power catamarans

  • Sailing catamaran

Twin hulls with a mast and sails, and auxiliary engines. Suits owners who want to sail, cruise long distances quietly and use less fuel. Rig, sails and appendages add maintenance.

  • Power / motor catamaran

Twin hulls driven by engines or electric motors, without a sailing rig. Suits owners who want simple handling, a stable platform and generous volume. Range depends on hull form, speed and propulsion.

  • Solar-assisted and electric

Some catamarans use solar panels and batteries for silent running at low speed. Real-world range depends on weather, load and use, so verify it on a sea trial.

  • Large and custom multihulls

Larger catamarans are often semi-custom or full custom. Each one should be assessed individually, not by brochure.

Multihull design

Beam, draft, bridgedeck and hull spacing

  • Beam: a wide catamaran is stable and spacious but may need a double-width berth, which costs more and is harder to find
  • Draft: shallow draft opens up anchorages; check it with boards or keels both up and down
  • Bridgedeck clearance: the height between the water and the underside of the deck affects slamming in waves
  • Hull spacing and volume: affect stability, motion and how much weight the yacht can carry
  • Payload: catamarans are sensitive to weight, which affects speed and safety
  • Haul-out: confirm local yards can lift a yacht of this beam

Sailing catamarans

Rigs, keels and daggerboards

  • Fixed mini-keels

Simple, robust and protective when beaching or grounding. Usually less efficient upwind.

  • Daggerboards

Lift up and down inside the hulls. Better upwind performance and shallower draft when raised. Check the cases, bearings and any hydraulic systems.

  • C-boards and curved foils

Used on some performance catamarans to add lift. Need careful inspection for damage and wear.

  • Rig and sails

Check mast and rigging age, inspection reports, sail inventory and sail-handling systems. Rig renewal is often a major cost.

Power catamarans

Engines, drives and range

  • Twin diesel engines: running hours, service history and engine room access
  • Shaft drives vs pod or saildrive units: seals, corrosion and service intervals
  • Planing, semi-displacement or displacement hulls: affects speed, fuel use and comfort
  • Range: ask for logged fuel use at real cruising speeds, not brochure figures
  • Generators and how often the yacht relies on them
  • Steering and twin-engine handling in tight marinas

Construction

Composite, carbon or aluminium

  • Composite (GRP / infused)

The most common construction. Check for moisture, osmosis and stress around the bridgedeck and beams.

  • Carbon

Light and stiff, used on performance catamarans. Needs specialist inspection, including ultrasound or thermography, to find hidden damage.

  • Aluminium

Used on some larger and expedition catamarans. Check corrosion, welds and paint condition.

Solar, battery, electric and hybrid

What to verify on an eco catamaran

  • Battery age, chemistry and measured state of health
  • Battery warranty and whether it transfers to a new owner
  • Solar panel output, condition and age
  • Electric motor and inverter service records
  • Real-world range at real speeds and loads
  • Charging options in your cruising area

Performance claims vary widely. Concept technology is not delivered technology. We judge each yacht on its records and sea trial.

Builder discovery

Catamaran builders

Other catamaran builders buyers often consider include Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Gunboat, HH Catamarans, McConaghy and Silent Yachts. We can search for their yachts privately. Lund Group is not affiliated with any of these builders.

Due diligence

How to assess a pre-owned catamaran

  • Charter-fleet history: number of seasons, usage and maintenance records
  • Survey of both hulls, the bridgedeck and the beams
  • Moisture and delamination checks on composite
  • Daggerboard, keel and rudder inspections
  • Rig and sail inspections on sailing catamarans
  • Engines, drives and generators in both hulls
  • Batteries, solar and electric systems
  • Grounding or repair history
  • Sea trial and, for sailing catamarans, a sail trial

Private sourcing

Beyond the public listings

Some catamarans change hands without public advertising. With a clear brief, we approach brokers and owners' representatives discreetly. We cannot promise off-market inventory. Every opportunity is confirmed with its owner first.

Catamarans: frequently asked questions

How many catamarans does Lund Group have for sale?

This page shows every published, active catamaran for sale in our database and updates automatically. If none are shown, we can still search the wider market privately.

Sailing catamaran or power catamaran?

A sailing catamaran suits owners who want to sail and cruise long distances quietly. A power catamaran suits owners who want simple handling and higher cruising speeds. Many buyers choose based on cruising area and crew.

Will a catamaran fit in a standard marina berth?

Often not. A catamaran's wide beam can need a larger or double berth. Check availability and cost in your home port before buying.

Is an ex-charter catamaran a good buy?

It can be, if the price reflects its use. Ask for the full charter and maintenance history and commission an independent survey.

Daggerboards or fixed keels?

Daggerboards improve upwind sailing and reduce draft when raised, but add systems to maintain. Fixed mini-keels are simpler and more robust.

Are electric and solar catamarans reliable?

It depends on the yacht. Check battery health, warranty and real-world range on a sea trial rather than relying on brochure figures.

Is Lund Group affiliated with the builders mentioned?

No. Lund Group is independent and represents buyers. We are not affiliated with or authorised by any shipyard.
