Size and volume

Why gross tonnage matters more than length

Length tells you how long a yacht is. Gross tonnage (GT) measures its internal volume, which shapes how much space guests and crew actually have. Two yachts of the same length can differ greatly in volume.

  • 24m load line length: the point at which large-yacht safety codes usually start to apply
  • 500GT: a key threshold for crew qualifications, safety management and some regulations
  • Over 3,000GT, further requirements can apply
  • Check the yacht's tonnage certificate, not only the brochure

How it was built

Full custom, semi-custom or series

  • Full custom

Designed and engineered for one owner. Unique, but harder to compare on price, and resale depends on how personal the design is.

  • Semi-custom

Built on a proven hull and engineering platform, with tailored layout and interiors. Easier to benchmark against sisterships.

  • Series / production

Built to a defined model with limited options. The easiest to compare and often the quickest to buy and sell.

Guests, crew and certification

The complexity grows with size

  • Most private and commercially coded yachts carry a maximum of 12 guests overnight
  • Crew numbers rise quickly with size, affecting cabins, payroll and management
  • Flag state and classification determine survey and compliance duties
  • Commercial charter use brings extra code requirements
  • Management company, ISM and crew agreements should be reviewed

Large-yacht features

Pools, beach clubs, helidecks and more

  • Pool

Check the structure, filtration, water treatment and how it is used at sea.

  • Beach club

Check the hatches, seals, drainage and the condition of the hydraulic platforms.

  • Helideck

Is it certified for landing or touch-and-go only, and for which helicopter size? Check the certificate.

  • Elevator

Check the service contract, inspection certificates and spare parts availability.

  • Dynamic positioning (DP)

Lets a yacht hold position without anchoring. Check its class notation, sensors and service history.

  • Stabilisers

Zero-speed stabilisers add comfort at anchor. Check service intervals and noise.

Operating costs

Plan for running costs, not just the price

Annual running costs for a superyacht depend on size, crew, cruising pattern, flag and use. The main costs are crew, maintenance and refits, insurance, berthing, fuel and management. We prepare a cost outline based on the specific yacht and how you plan to use it, rather than quoting a generic percentage.

Superyachts: frequently asked questions

What counts as a superyacht?

There is no single legal definition. On this page we include yachts of 30 metres and above. Volume (gross tonnage) is often a better measure of size than length.

How is this page different from all yachts for sale?

All yachts for sale covers every size and type. This page focuses on large yachts, grouped by length, volume and builder, with large-yacht buying guidance.

How much does it cost to run a superyacht?

It depends on size, crew, use and flag. We prepare a cost outline for the specific yacht rather than quoting a generic figure.

Can you find superyachts that are not publicly listed?

We can approach the market discreetly for your brief. We cannot promise off-market inventory; any opportunity is confirmed only once the owner or their representative agrees to share it.

Should I buy pre-owned or build new?

Pre-owned is faster and easier to inspect. A new build allows full personalisation but usually takes several years.

Is Lund Group affiliated with the builders listed?

No. Lund Group is independent and represents buyers. We are not affiliated with or authorised by any shipyard.
