Hull types

Displacement, semi-displacement or planing

  • Displacement

Moves through the water. Efficient and comfortable over long range at lower speeds. Typical of larger motor superyachts and explorers.

  • Semi-displacement

A compromise: higher speeds than displacement with better range than planing. Common in fast-displacement designs of 30–60m.

  • Planing

Rises onto the surface for high speed. Higher fuel use and more sensitivity to weight. Typical of sport and open yachts.

Hull type is confirmed for each yacht from its documents. We do not assume it from builder or size.

Construction

Steel, aluminium, GRP and composite

Steel hull, aluminium superstructure: common on long-range yachts above about 50m. Check coatings, corrosion and ultrasonic thickness readings.

All-aluminium: lighter and faster. Check welds, galvanic corrosion and fairing.

GRP and composite: usual below about 40m. Check for osmosis, delamination and any structural repairs.

Propulsion

Shafts, pods, jets, outboards and hybrid

  • Shaft drive

Conventional on most larger yachts. Check shaft alignment, bearings and propellers.

  • Pods (IPS, Zeus)

Efficient, with joystick handling on many planing yachts. Check pod service intervals and seals.

  • Waterjets

For very fast yachts and shallow water. Check impellers and wear.

  • Outboards

Increasingly common on sport yachts and tenders. Check hours and the warranty position.

  • Hybrid / diesel-electric

Quiet running at anchor and at low speed. Check battery age, health and warranty.

  • Engines and generators

Request oil analysis, hours, major service records and the classification status.

Due diligence

How to assess a pre-owned motor yacht

  • Classification and flag status, with survey due dates
  • Engine and generator hours, oil analysis and overhaul history
  • Hull survey: corrosion, osmosis or fairing
  • Stabilisers, thrusters and hydraulics
  • Refit history and any changes to weight
  • Crew, management and charter history

New build

Buy pre-owned or build new?

A pre-owned motor yacht can be in use within weeks. A semi-custom new build usually takes two to three years, and a full-custom superyacht longer. Shipyard slots, delivery dates and prices must be confirmed by the yard. Explore new-build advisory →

Motor yachts: frequently asked questions

How many motor yachts does Lund Group have for sale?

This page shows every published, active motor yacht for sale in our database and updates automatically. The global market is much larger, and we can search it privately for you.

What is the difference between displacement, semi-displacement and planing hulls?

Displacement hulls move through the water and are efficient over long ranges at lower speeds. Planing hulls rise onto the surface for high speed but use more fuel. Semi-displacement hulls sit in between.

Steel or aluminium?

Larger long-range yachts often have steel hulls with aluminium superstructures. All-aluminium yachts are lighter and faster. Smaller yachts are commonly GRP or composite. Each needs a different survey approach.

What propulsion should I look for?

Shafts are common on larger yachts. Pods such as Volvo Penta IPS or Zeus suit many planing yachts; waterjets suit very fast yachts; hybrid systems allow quieter running. Service history matters more than the system type.

Are listed prices negotiable?

Asking prices are set by the seller. We do not publish valuations or completed sale prices, which are usually confidential.

Can you find a motor yacht that is not publicly listed?

We can approach the market discreetly for your brief. We cannot promise off-market inventory; any opportunity is confirmed only once the owner or their representative agrees to share it.

Is Lund Group affiliated with the builders listed?

No. Lund Group is independent and represents buyers. We are not affiliated with or authorised by any shipyard.
