Where the superyacht market begins
30–35m and 35–40m
30–35m
0 listed
Lund Group's editorial superyacht threshold. Mostly semi-custom planing and fast-displacement yachts, with professional crew and a clear step up in volume from the 20–30m market.
Source privately →35–40m
0 listed
Often tri-deck or with an owner's deck, larger beach clubs and tender garages, and a higher share of displacement and steel/aluminium yachts. Many are still designed to remain under 500GT.
Source privately →
A yacht measuring exactly 40.00m appears on the 40–50m page. Smaller yachts are on the 20–30m page. For the wider category, see superyachts for sale.
Volume
Gross tonnage and sub-500GT yachts
Two yachts of the same length can feel completely different on board. Gross tonnage (GT) measures enclosed internal volume — it is not weight, and it is not displacement. At 30–40m, GT is often a better guide than length to living space, crew areas and running costs.
- GT = enclosed volume; displacement = weight of water displaced
- Many 30–40m yachts are designed to stay under 500GT
- The 500GT threshold commonly affects crew certification and some regulatory requirements, depending on flag and use
- A high-volume 36m can exceed a low-volume 39m
- Only the yacht's tonnage certificate is reliable — never a brochure figure
- We show GT only where the yacht's documents support it
This is general information, not legal or regulatory advice. Confirm the requirements for a specific yacht with its flag, class society and a qualified adviser.
By type
Motor, sailing, catamaran and explorer
Motor yachts
0 listed at 30–40m
Planing, semi-displacement and displacement yachts — the largest share of this size.
All motor yachts for sale →Sailing yachts
0 listed at 30–40m
Performance and blue-water sailing yachts, typically semi-custom or full custom.
All sailing yachts for sale →Catamarans
0 listed at 30–40m

All catamarans for sale →Explorer yachts
0 listed at 30–40m
Long-range, robust yachts built for remote cruising. Mission is documented separately from hull type.
All explorer yachts for sale →
Flybridge
Common at the lower end of the band. A sun deck above the wheelhouse, often with a hardtop.
Tri-deck
Three full decks above the main deck structure. We describe the actual deck arrangement rather than label by length.
Fast / planing
High speed with higher fuel burn. Engine hours and drive condition are critical.
Displacement
Efficient long-range cruising with more volume, usually steel hull and aluminium superstructure.
Open / sport
Performance-led, with fewer interior decks and large exterior areas.
Explorer
Range, tankage, tender capacity and robust systems over speed.
Build type
Series, semi-custom and full custom
Build type is one of the biggest differences between yachts of similar length. It shapes how easily a yacht can be compared, how it holds value, and what can be changed.
- Series: a defined model with limited options — the easiest to compare against sisterships
- Semi-custom: a proven hull and engineering platform with tailored layout and interiors — very common at 30–40m
- Full custom: designed for one owner; rarer here and harder to benchmark
- Model number ≠ actual length: always compare length overall, not the name
- One model name can span several generations with different hulls, engines and layouts
- Factory options and later refits shape value as much as year

Crew and circulation
A professionally crewed yacht
The biggest change from the 20–30m market is crew. Almost every 30–40m yacht is run by a professional captain and crew, and the way crew move around the yacht — separately from guests — shapes the whole layout.
- Crew cabins, crew mess and a dedicated crew stair
- Galley location and service routes to the dining areas
- Separate guest and crew circulation
- Captain's cabin, often near the bridge
- Crew numbers set by safe manning, use and service level
- Owner operation is unusual at this size and depends on the yacht and flag
Layout
Guests, master suite and leisure
- Guest capacity: many privately used yachts accommodate up to 12 guests; documents decide
- Master suite on the main deck, lower deck forward or a dedicated owner's deck
- Cabin count and arrangement — doubles, twins, convertible cabins
- Beach club with hydraulic platform or fold-down terraces
- Tender garage versus deck-launched tenders and toys
- Jacuzzi or pool on the sun deck
- Interior volume per guest — another reason to look at GT
Technical
Propulsion, stabilisation, range and speed
Shaft drive
The most common arrangement at this size. Check shafts, seals, bearings and propellers at haul-out.
Waterjets
Found on fast yachts. Check impellers, wear rings and steering hydraulics.
Hybrid / diesel-electric
Quieter running at anchor and low speed. Battery age and system support matter.
Stabilisers
Zero-speed fins or gyros make the biggest difference to comfort at anchor. Check type and service records.
Thrusters and DP
Bow and stern thrusters ease docking; dynamic positioning is rare in this size.
Range and speed
Depend on hull form, load and sea state. Treat brochure figures as indicative, never guaranteed.
Steel + aluminium
Steel hull with aluminium superstructure — typical of displacement yachts. Check for corrosion and coatings.
Aluminium
Common on fast yachts. Check welds, galvanic protection and fatigue.
GRP / composite
Widespread on semi-custom planing yachts. Check core moisture, laminate and stress cracking.
Class and status
Class, flag and commercial status
Class, flag and commercial code are three different things, and each affects how a yacht can be used and sold.
- Class society: technical standard and periodic surveys
- Flag state: registration, manning and safety rules
- Commercial code: needed for charter in many jurisdictions
- Private or commercial registration affects tax, crew and use
- Class survey due dates affect near-term cost
- VAT and ownership status must be documented, never assumed
Charter potential
Can a 30–40m yacht charter?
Many yachts in this range are chartered, but charter capability depends on commercial registration, crew, safety equipment, layout and location. Charter rates are not investment returns: income varies with season, demand, management and costs, and is never guaranteed.
Due diligence
How to assess a pre-owned 30–40m yacht
- Independent pre-purchase survey, out of the water
- Engine and generator survey, oil analysis, hours and service history
- Class status and upcoming survey dates
- Refit history: what was done, by whom and when
- Paint and coatings, teak decks
- Stabilisers, thrusters and hydraulics
- AV/IT, network and cybersecurity
- Tonnage, flag, VAT and ownership documents
- Sea trial run by the yacht's captain with your surveyor present
Engine and machinery testing should be carried out only by qualified surveyors and the yacht's crew.
Ownership
Operating costs and berthing
- Crew salaries and benefits — usually the largest cost
- Berthing: high-season Mediterranean berths at 30–40m are scarce
- Fuel, depending on speed and hull form
- Insurance, class and flag fees
- Maintenance, yard periods and refit reserve
- Professional management and accounting
Costs vary widely by yacht and use. We prepare an outline for a specific yacht rather than quote a generic percentage.
Market intelligence
Pricing in the 30–40m market
There are not yet enough published listings in this size to show reliable price statistics. We do not publish a generic “average 35m yacht price” — value depends on builder, model, generation, GT, engines, hours, refit history and condition. Ask us for comparables on a specific yacht. 30–40m yachts: frequently asked questions
Are there 30–40m yachts for sale with Lund Group right now?
The count on this page is live and shows only verified, published listings. When none are published in this size range, we can still search the wider market privately for your brief.
Is a 40m yacht included on this page?
No. This page covers yachts from 30.00m up to, but not including, 40.00m length overall. A yacht of exactly 40m appears on the 40–50m page. A yacht of exactly 30m appears here.
Is a 30m yacht a superyacht?
There is no single legal definition. Lund Group uses 30m length overall as its editorial superyacht threshold, while many in the industry use 24m. The term describes scale, not a regulatory category.
What does sub-500GT mean?
Gross tonnage (GT) measures enclosed internal volume, not weight. Many 30–40m yachts are designed to stay under 500GT, a threshold that commonly affects crew certification and some regulatory requirements depending on flag and use. The yacht's own tonnage certificate is the only reliable source.
How many crew does a 30–40m yacht need?
Typically a professional crew, often somewhere in the region of five to nine, but the right number depends on the yacht, its flag, its use, private or charter, and the owner's service expectations. Minimum safe manning is set by the flag state.
Can I run a 30–40m yacht myself?
Owner operation is unusual at this size. Most yachts are run by a professional captain and crew because of their systems, regulatory requirements and guest service. We describe the actual crew set-up of each yacht rather than assume.
How much does a 30–40m yacht cost to own?
Running costs depend on crew, berth, fuel, insurance, maintenance, class and management. We prepare a cost outline for a specific yacht rather than quoting a generic percentage of its value.
Is Lund Group affiliated with the builders mentioned?
No. Lund Group is independent and represents buyers. We are not affiliated with or authorised by any shipyard.
